Maa, the latest film of Kajol is taking its own route in the box office. Even though the horror drama is witnessing a steep fall in collections on weekdays, the movie has surpassed the 19 crore mark in four days and emerged as a better performer than Emergency and Loveyapa, which released recently. Even with a slightly slowed pace, the film still maintains its committed audience.
Day 4 shows a sharp decline, but the 20 crores milestone is achievable
Maa had a good weekend collection-wise wise but on Monday, the collections dropped remarkably. However, as per trade analysts, the movie has raised an approximate 1.97 crore on Day 4, a steep fall of 72 per cent of its earnings on Sunday.
This totals to 19.62 crores in India, and the film is all set to beat the 20 crore mark in its fifth day.
Maa Box Office Run So Far Breakdown
Taken at a glance, this is how Maa has been performing in its first four days:
- Friday (Day 1) 4.65 crore
- Saturday (Day 2): RS 6 crore
- 2nd Day (Sunday): 7 crores
- Monday (Day 4): 1.97 crores
- Grand (4 Days): 19.62 crore
The movie has been performing well in terms of improvement over the weekend, but the industry-standard slowdown was witnessed on Monday. The next few days will help show whether it will be able to stabilize itself by using weekdays.
Regional Occupancy Theatre Footfall
On Monday, Maa had a nationwide occupancy of 12.67% for its Hindi version. Here’s how it performed in key regions:
- Delhi-NCR: Highest turnout at 16.50% with over 630 shows
- Mumbai: Around 14.50% occupancy from 473 shows
- Pune: Registered 12.25% occupancy across 193 screens
Though the footfalls remained low, the movie retained a certain momentum in the metros, particularly in multiplex chains.
Maa Overtakes Emergency and Loveyapa in a Few Days
Maa has already surpassed the full theatrical release of two other significant releases of 2025 in just four days:
- Emergency, directed by Kangana Ranaut in her directorial debut, raked in 18.35 crores in its total collection in India.
- Loveyapa starring Junaid Khan and Khushi Kapoor failed to touch the 1 crore mark at the box office.
With less than a week to cross these benchmarks, Maa has put itself at the vanguard over some of its peers- even though there are yet to establish a blockbuster.
First Horror Movie of Kajol Attracts Mixed Reception
This is the first horror film by Kajol, produced by Ajay Devgn. Her acting has been enjoyed by the fans, but the movie has fallen in a mixed category of evaluations. It has nonetheless enjoyed the interest of audiences who may be keen to watch the veteran actor in a different avatar altogether, darker and edgier.
The awards The film won the National Film Award at its third attempt in 2006, losing to a 1990 film when it was first nominated in 1996 and to a 2005 film when it was re-nominated in 2005. Salaam Venky (2022), the last movie of Kajol in the theatre, failed to perform better as it earned 3.36 crores.
Her recent enormous success is still Tanhaji (2020), Ajay Devgn’s featuring film that took on an enormous 279.6 crore in India.
Maa Rating at the Horror Genre
A series of horror releases in 2025 has failed to produce an impression, as all of the titles left an average rating at the box office. Maa is the following:
- Kapkapiii: Raised only 1, 78 crore
- The Bhootnii: Geared 9.57 crore
- Chhorii 2: Direct to Streaming release
Though on the face of it, Maa is doing absolutely better than this categorization of movies, the genre in itself does not work to claim larger audiences in cinemas.
Maa Trails Behind compared to Shaitaan
Maa can hardly compete with the 2024 supernatural thriller Shaitaan of Ajay Devgn in terms of scope and revenue. Starring Jyothika and R Madhavan, the film Shaitaan collected 54 crores in its initial four days and later on, made more than 213 crores worldwide.
Maa did not start as fast, and its box office imprint does not carry the same size as its predecessors, but it is still a strong addition to the mid-size movies of the year.
What does the Future Hold for Maa?
- The movie is projected to collect more than 20 crores on Tuesday (Day 5).
- Maa has a slender opportunity to gain weekday momentum before the next weekend because there is no serious opposition.
- It might creep to a lifetime collection of 25-30 crore by maintaining a stable grip on metro cities.
Maintaining interest will, however, be important, particularly when word-of-mouth takes over as the major force in the subsequent week.
Overview: Maa Makes Small Difference But Pops above Peers
Although Maa might not qualify as a runaway success, it has at least left a mark. The film has found its ground because of Kajol trying her hand on horror, and Ajay Devgn producing it. Beating the theatrical legacy of such movies as Emergency and Loveyapa in a couple of days is not an ordinary achievement.
The big question at this point relates to the performance of the film during the second weekend. Will Maa defy expectations and prove herself in a last-minute rush, or have a quiet finish? At any rate, they have demonstrated that even a genre film with a rather minimal budget would have its niche in the movie theatres, particularly when provided with the star power and a nail-biting idea or concept.
