India and England’s upcoming Test series will now be played for the Tendulkar-Anderson Trophy, honoring cricket icons Sachin Tendulkar and James Anderson. Get all the details about the series, legacy, and India’s 2025 squad.
🔔 A Historic Change in Cricket: Introducing the Tendulkar-Anderson Trophy
Ahead of the highly anticipated five-Test series, the BCCI and ECB have officially renamed the India-England Test battle as the Tendulkar-Anderson Trophy, paying tribute to two cricketing legends. The series kicks off on June 20, 2025, at the legendary Lord’s Cricket Ground in London.
The trophy will be officially presented on June 11, just before the World Test Championship Final, also taking place at Lord’s. This decision honors two cricketing legends — Sachin Tendulkar, India’s iconic batsman, and James Anderson, England’s legendary fast bowler.
🌟 Why Tendulkar and Anderson Deserve the Honour
Naming the trophy after Sachin Tendulkar and James Anderson brings two cricketing giants into permanent legacy status.
Sachin Tendulkar, who played for India from 1989 to 2013, holds the record for the most runs in Test cricket, scoring 15,921 runs across 200 matches.
James Anderson, now retired from international cricket, is the most successful fast bowler in Test history with 704 wickets, making him England’s all-time leading wicket-taker.
Interestingly, Anderson dismissed Tendulkar nine times in Test matches — more than any other bowler — making their on-field rivalry unforgettable. Despite Anderson stepping back from international duties, he continues to serve as England’s bowling consultant and remains active in county cricket with Lancashire.
This trophy continues the tradition of commemorative Test series titles, similar to the Crowe-Thorpe Trophy that celebrates Martin Crowe of New Zealand and Graham Thorpe of England.
🏆 The End of the Pataudi Trophy Era
Until now, matches between India and England in England were played for the Pataudi Trophy, introduced in 2007 to mark 75 years of Test cricket between the two nations. The trophy celebrated the Pataudi family’s legacy — particularly Iftikhar Ali Khan Pataudi, who played for both countries, and his son, Mansoor Ali Khan Pataudi, a legendary Indian captain.
In contrast, Test series played in India were contested for the Anthony de Mello Trophy, named after BCCI’s first secretary and president.
The last Test series between the two sides ended in a 2-2 draw, making England the current holder of the Pataudi Trophy.
Following the rebranding, Sharmila Tagore, wife of the late Mansoor Ali Khan Pataudi, shared her views with Hindustan Times. She noted that while the ECB didn’t communicate directly, they did send a letter to Saif Ali Khan (Pataudi’s son), confirming the trophy’s retirement.
“Whether the BCCI chooses to keep Tiger’s legacy alive is now up to them,” she remarked.
